Jewar Airport
Jewar Airport also called as the Noida International Airport is being constructed near Jewar located in the Gautam Buddha District, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is a forthcoming project which will connect with the Delhi NCR. The international airport will be a part of the new Yamuna city or YEIDA city. This city is an enterprise of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Developmental Authority and the Gautam Buddha District following the cities of Noida and Greater Noida.
The Noida International Airport is expected to be the Asia’s and India’s largest airport. The agency managing the operations of the airport representing the Government of India is Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL). The cities of Uttar Pradesh like Mathura, Agra, and Gautam Buddha Nagar will be a part of the aviation network connecting to the other cities of the world.
A highway project of around 31 kilometres known as the Greenfield Highway is built by the National Highways Authority of India. It will connect the airport to Sector 65 Noida, Faridabad, and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The development of the airport is through the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The foundation stone of the Noida International Airport was kept by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on November 26, 2021.
Plan of Jewar Airport
The initial plan is to build a two-runaway airport covering an area of around 1334 hectares by the end of 2024. It is expected to expand to eight runaway airports spreading to a distance of 7200 acres or 2900 hectares. Each runaway would be around a length of 4km. The airport will have four terminals and will be able to accommodate 1.2 crore passengers per year in the initial phase reaching up to 6 to 12 crore passengers per year after the expansion plan. The bid for the development of the Noida International Airport was won by the Flughafen Zurich AG in 2019 who is also the operator of Zurich Airport in Switzerland.
The proposed plan of the Jewar Airport is to help decongest the Indira Gandhi International Airport reaching its threshold limit. The construction of this airport will help in providing better air connectivity and introducing a new avenue for tourist sites.
Jewar Airport is the third commercial airport of the NCR region after the Hindon Airport and Indira Gandhi International Airport.
History of Jewar Airport
In 2001: The plan for the Noida International Airport was proposed by the previous Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Rajnath Singh. It was earlier named the Taj International Aviation Hub.
In 2018: The Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) was assigned the bidding and construction authority of the Jewar Airport in August.
: Funds for the acquisition of land for the Jewar Airport were allotted by the Uttar Pradesh State Government in November.
In 2019: The land acquisition process for the airport started in January.

Connectivity to Different Locations from the Jewar Airport
The location of the Noida International Airport is at a distance of 7 km from the Jewar town of the Gautam Buddha district in Uttar Pradesh, India. The three subdivisions of the district are Dadri, Noida, and Jewar. The distance of this airport from the Indira Gandhi International Airport is around 72km.
The various lands acquired by the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Authority (YEIDA) for the first phase of the construction are Dayanat Pur, Ramner, Mukimpur Siwara, Rohi, Parohi, Ranhera, Kishorpur, and Banwari Bas. The land acquisitions for the second phase of the expansion of the airport are Birampur, Ranhera, Shahpur Nangla, Dayanat Pur, and Karauli Bangar.
The airport connects with the Yamuna Expressway to offer ease of travel for domestic and international passengers. It offers better reach from the cities like Mathura, Vrindavan, and Agra.

The Master Plan of Jewar Airport
The final master plan proposed for the Jewar Airport is a six-runaway airport. The initial project proposed is a two-runaway airport meant to be completed by December 2024. The Jewar airport is meant to be the World’s fourth largest and India and Asia’s largest airport.
Different Construction Stages of Jewar Airport
The construction of the Jewar Airport is divided into four stages:
Stage 1: The first phase of the airport includes the building of terminal 1, a system of air traffic control, runaway, cargo services, high-speed railways, metro line connectivity, and other essential commercial establishments. The Terminal 1 building is expected to cover an area of around 90,000 square metres.
Stage 2: The second phase includes the development of a new runaway, the building of terminal 2, and a taxiway which will be parallel to the runaway.
Stage 3: The third phase of the construction includes the building of a third terminal and a second parallel taxiway. Three rapid exitways for taxis and an additional 37 parking bays are built for aircraft with apron expansion. This is where the maintenance and other requirements of an aeroplane are managed. Terminal 3 is expected to cover an area of 1, 60,000 square metres.
Stage 4: The fourth phase includes the building of terminal 4 of the airport spreading across an area of 1, 60,000 square metres. There will be an extension of the cargo terminal to an area of 1, 50,000 square metres. Three rapid exit ways for taxis, expansion of the aircraft apron area for an additional 25 bays, and two parallel taxiways to be constructed.
Connectivity of Jewar Airport
The Noida International Airport connects the road network via highways and high and low-speed rail connectivity.
Connectivity by Road
The highway connecting the airport with Delhi-NCR is the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut expressway. Further, it connects with the Ghaziabad-Aligarh expressway (NH-34).
Proposed plans for highway connectivity to the Jewar Airport
- A highway is planned to connect the airport to the Delhi-Mumbai expressway running through Sector 65 Faridabad.
- It will connect to the Yamuna expressway running through Dayantpur village located in Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar.
- The airport will connect with the Eastern peripheral expressway which is the Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal expressway (KGP) at the Mohna village located in Ballabhgarh.
Connectivity by Rail
Metro Rail Network:
- The Jewar Airport would be connected to the Noida metro system by the Greater Noida route.
- It will connect to the Delhi metro line by the route of Faridabad-Ballabhgarh-Palwal-Jewar.
- A monorail project is also proposed by the Uttar Pradesh Government connecting the airport to Delhi.
- Film City project of Noida – A personal rapid transit (PRT) to be running from the amusement park to the Noida International Airport. A pod taxi service to connect the Jewar airport to the Noida film city with a 14 km long route consisting of 12 stations.
High-Speed Railway Network
A high-speed railway station connecting the Noida International Airport at the Delhi-Varanasi HSR corridor is proposed.
Semi-High Speed Rail Network
- A rapid rail transit (RRT) system at the Ghaziabad-Jewar route covers a total of 11 stations. It is a 71.1 km long rail system which is to be completed in two phases by 2031.
- Palwal-Noida International Airport-Khurja Railway Line (PNAKR line): Noida airport connecting Palwal and Khurja by a new railway station. This station will be connected to Palwal from the west on the New Delhi – Mumbai main line and to Khurja from the east on the Howrah-Delhi (Kolkata-Amritsar) main line.
- Hisar Airport-Noida International Airport Railway Line (HANAR line): The Noida International Airport will directly connect with the Indira Gandhi International Airport and Hisar Airport by two lines. The PNAK line coming from Palwal connects Noida airport to IGI by the Delhi-Jaipur rail line and Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor (HORC). Noida Airport connects with the Hisar Airport through the HORC and HIAIGI line, Hisar International Airport-IGI Airport Line.
- Chola Railway to Noida International Airport: A railway link will be built connecting the Jewar Airport to the Chola Railway Station located in Bulandshahr.

Proposal to Build Aerotropolis around Jewar Airport
There is a proposed plan of building an aerotropolis by the Uttar Pradesh Government. The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority aims to build the residential and commercial spaces around the airport to boost the tourism, real-estate sector, and investment opportunities.
There will be commercial shops, logistics centres, technology and innovation-oriented spaces, hospitality avenues, and entertainment and recreational areas. The height of the buildings is to be restricted to 20 metres built around the airport. This is following the Airports Authority of India.
This proposal is a part of the Noida Master Plan 2041.
